Steven Russo, Artistic Director of Starlight Express in Bochum, Germany
“The West Side article is exactly what I deal with here in Bochum (Germany) every day. I never thought it would hit Broadway. The new generation of actors and actresses for some reason do not have the standard of professionalism there once was. They go directly into big shows and do not have to struggle to make it there. They are coming in with no experience or theatre etiquette! They are not aware that we (the artistic, creative and management teams) look at them not only on the stage but back stage as well. To tell you the truth it just makes me angry. They will lose there jobs after one year and leave with bad reputations. But they do not seem to care!”
Mr. Russo’s “2 Cents of Advice”: “Just to remember and ask yourself everyday why you chose to get into this business. To repect the stage and remember at all times people are paying good money to see you give 100% on that stage. Last but not least enjoy the experience and be grateful!”
Note from Peter: Starlight Express, in many performing artists’ opinion, is the most challenging show there is! You’ve got to not only sing, dance, act…but you’ve got to do stunts, tricks, flips, speed race, and more…ALL ON SKATES!
